Il Pavone has occupied the lower ground floor of the prestigious Princes Square since 1991, and whilst many of the original and best dishes still grace the menu today, this Glasgow restaurant has now revamped and reopened with beautiful new decor and a delicious update in the Italian cuisine.

We joined some of Glasgow’s top bloggers (check out their posts in this article and give them a follow!) at their reopening event to sample the menu, sip the cocktails and take in the new feel of a much-loved, time-trusted establishment. Get your sneak peek here and then treat yourself and book a table to enjoy the Il Pavone experience for yourself!

Glasgow Restaurant Review: Il Pavone

The cocktail list was well and truly studied (and sampled) and we could find no fault. @scottishfoodbible can testify for the mojitos, @erikuccia1989 recommended the Italian Sunset and @mermaid_harley sipped on a French Martini. The sunshine was warm enough this week to justify a Sex on the Beach for @sinmiraranadie and the olives and breads to start were a delight. The GlasgowLiving gang can vouch for the Prosecco-based cocktails – we went personalised and enjoyed a Strawberry Bellini before going for a glass of Sardinian white wine, which complemented the seafood main perfectly.

What we ate:

A popular dish on the blogger’s night was the Fettucine alla Portofino, recommended by Carlo, the manager and our passionate cameriere for the evening who talked us through the bountiful menu and pointed out his favourite, traditional dishes which have been made by the restaurant for 26 years. Il Pavone is celebrated for seafood dishes, so we went for the Penne Salmone, made with smoked salmon, asparagus, vodka, parmesan and spring onion. The vodka sweetens and adds a touch of the unusual to this delicious dish, and the spirit features in several unexpected places throughout the menu. Intrigued? It was delicious!

The desserts were also fabulous, and the Italian espresso was, perhaps predictably but happily, an excellent end to the meal. Sundaes and cheesecakes were the main attraction. This delicious nutty and lemon sundae’s name eludes me, as I’d asked Carlo to surprise me and I wasn’t disappointed! @Foodie_explorers went for the Tablet Sundae – the perfect mix of Italian and Scottish tradition.

The decor is dark, muted and classic with unexpected accents. Think gold cacti and the restaurant’s peacock namesake struts the space, seen in the tail feathers on the bar and dotted in vases before mirrored walls, not to mention the magnificent stained glass peacock window taking pride of place within the varnished wood panelling.

What we liked:

Variety: the menu is big, but the staff know it like the back of their hands. When you visit, make sure you ask for their advice and you’ll definitely find something that suits you!

Drinks: The cocktails are fabulous and made to order with plenty of scope for personalisation. The wine menu is carefully curated and if you were just looking for drinks, then the olives and breads would make for the perfect accompaniment to an elegant and classy evening.

Atmosphere: Stepping into Princes Square always raises the glamour stakes for Glasgow nights out, and Il Pavone thoroughly looks the part, especially now that the face-lift is all finished. The details are beautiful and although, like most of the Princes Square restaurants, it is fairly open-plan, there are plenty of cosy corners if you’re after a more quiet evening.

What an amazing night at @ilpavoneglasgow met some amazing bloggers & instagrammers!
